What symbolism or hidden layers might readers miss on a first read?

I especially love Arthur’s dreams—they’re full of meaning. At first, he doesn’t realize that they all point to Lara being hidden. It’s a subtle thread woven into the story, and one that may slip past on the first read. There’s also much more happening beneath the surface of the plot than it seems at first glance.
